Selecting an Antiperspirant for Sensitive Skin
Some antiperspirants can cause irritation, itchiness and rashes to sensitive skin. It is important to check and read the label if the product contains active ingredient that are harmful to delicate and sensitive skin.
Applying antiperspirant is part of personal hygiene. However, most antiperspirants contain ingredients that may be harsh to users with sensitive skin. More so, it doesn't help that the underarm is an area of the body that is prone to irritation because it is delicate and thin. On top of that, since it is a moist and warm area, it is also a breeding ground for bacteria. There are some ingredients that can cause skin irritation which you have to check when you're choosing a brand of antiperspirant.
Active antiperspirant ingredients such as aluminum compounds are usually dissolved in alcohol as it dries faster and it also feels fresh and cool when it is sprayed on or applied to the skin. But alcohol can easily dry out the skin which can result to irritation. This ingredient is most often used is gels, roll-ons and aerosols so people may want to use antiperspirant sticks that do not have alcohol in their content.
There are brands of antiperspirant that use aluminum based compounds as an active ingredient as this is the content that will halt the moisture production of the skin temporarily by blocking the sweat ducts. However, this ingredient is harsh for sensitive skin. There are aluminum-free antiperspirants that are available in the market or you can opt for a milder ingredient such as aluminum sesquichlorohydrate.
Most of the antiperspirants come in different scents but the fragrance can cause itchiness and rashes. A deodorant contains fragrance that can mask the odor which is not suitable for people with sensitive skin. On the other hand, there are unscented antiperspirants that you can purchase to avoid skin irritation. The best way to be certain that you're buying the right product is to read the label - you have to check if the antiperspirant contains perfume, parfum or fragrance.
If you experience skin irritation because of the antiperspirant, stop using the product immediately and wait until the skin clears up before you try another product that do not contain any of the harmful ingredients that were identified. It's possible to find the best product that would be suitable for your skin type, just always remember to read the labels before purchasing the product.
